All right, I confess, I stumbled upon Metallica's new record while browsing today. What is funny is that I was not especially looking for it. Grabbed it anyway. I guess it doesn't matter much... I'm such a completist that I will end up buying the CD no matter what.
Actually, hearing a crappy mp3 just makes me crave for the real CD. It is always a pleasure to blast a new CD in a good sound system and hear exactly what we were supposed to hear production-wise.
Back to the album, I have yet to listen to it a few times, but it sure is impressive. It is angry, mean, harsh, not always melodic. Long songs, most of them clocking at over 7 minutes, filled with riffs, riffs and more riffs. Not that we really care, but this won't get much radio airplay.
Seems quite promising. I think that my feeling about the fact that this album might sound "forced" are fading... seems legit, inspired. Not their best album, but solid effort - in my opinion Metallica sounded better when they were more melodic (I think that there is too much of pointless "St. Anger" type of agression in there). But that is why it sounds inspired... got to give it to them that their sound has constantly been evolving since the beginning. That is something that I respect, since I enjoy seeing artists challenging themselves.
I will get a more detailed review when I'll blast it in my CD player in two weeks...
